Kalanick's enterprise mining go-to-market is nothing like consumer playbooks. He personally flew into remote mines in deep northern Brazil and on the Iraq-Saudi border — where GPS was jammed and pilots had to land visually — to meet customers like Vale, the world's largest iron ore mine operator.
Most executives talk a great game. Kalanick's filter: you need someone who can organize at scale AND solve hard problems — and very few people can do both. When in doubt, bet on the problem solver. He runs himself as 'problem solver in chief' and demands that every direct report be deputized to do the same.
Kalanick told the hosts that a16z should have been an Uber investor — a partnership that never happened and that he believes would have changed the outcome of his turbulent 2017. Now they're finally working together, and he's calling the moment what it is: unfinished business.
Kalanick ran a masterclass in venture auction dynamics for Uber's 2011 Series B, using an 'uncapped anchor' technique to drive competing offers from $210M to $375M pre-money. Then a16z blinked at dinner, offering only $210M, and the deal went to Shervin Milner at Menlo Park — beginning a decade of what Ben Horowitz calls 'torture.'
Uber's 2017 implosion wasn't inevitable. Kalanick says had a16z been on the board, Uber would be a considerably larger and more central company today — likely the leader in food delivery and autonomous vehicles. DoorDash had 5% market share. Uber's autonomy was second only to Waymo. The network was there. It just needed the right governance.
