Grief Must Be Witnessed — And the Power of the Group

At 22:12 · chapter starts 20:43

Kessler returns to the principle that grief must be witnessed, but now adds its crucial second dimension: after witnessing the pain — 'that job meant everything, I'm so sorry' — a true grief companion must also witness the grieving person's capacity to turn things around. Most people stop at the first step, leaving the grieving person seen in their pain but without a vision for their future. The second witness — 'I know you, I believe in you, you might not see it right now but I do' — is what breaks the loop. This is why grief groups are so powerful: members find themselves in each other's stories and find their healing there too. Connection, Kessler repeats, is what heals grief and trauma, because grief is a severance and connection is its remedy.
