Boredom is simply what insufficient attention feels like. The deeper problem is that unmonitored waking thought is structurally identical to dreaming without knowing you're dreaming: your brain generates vivid, emotionally charged scenarios and you don't notice the lack of psychological continuity any more than a dreamer notices they've teleported to another country. The 3am thought spiral is his most visceral example — the cascade of anxious self-interrogation that keeps people awake, all driven by thoughts they never notice having. He extends the analogy: just as waking from a nightmare immediately dissolves its logic (no parking lot, no psychopath, nothing to fight), waking from unmonitored thought — through mindful attention — dissolves its emotional grip with equal totality. Anger is his practical illustration: useful for five seconds as an alerting signal, it is almost never the state you want to be in to solve the problem that made you angry. The same is true of 99% of all worry.
