Coming to Terms with Health Struggles You Don't Deserve

Asked by a listener how he's come to terms with serious illness despite living healthily, Chris gives one of his most honest answers of the episode. He hasn't. The cosmic injustice of not smoking, not partying, living carefully and still getting mold and Lyme disease while some 65-year-old smoker in Wyoming is perfectly fine — it doesn't make sense and it's enraging. But he warns against constructing a karmic narrative to justify it, because the same logic that says 'bad things happen to me because of fate' also strips agency over recovery. The bigger insight came from philosopher Daniel Schmachtenberger, who sent Chris a voice note saying no one he knows of has become truly humble and empathetic without a period of genuinely not knowing if they'd recover. Two years of illness has, as Chris puts it, made it impossible to be dismissive of other people's invisible suffering — and he now extends care to the world he realises he was withholding before.
