His current relationship, with a securely attached partner, felt strange at first — he wasn't even sure she liked him, because he'd been conditioned to equate anxiety with interest. When they finally talked about it openly, the revelation was anticlimactic in the best possible way: this is just what a healthy relationship looks like. It's boring. He then pivots to a meta-analysis of 43 studies that identified the master variables predicting relationship success: perceived partner commitment, appreciation, sexual satisfaction, low conflict, and — above all — partner responsiveness. Not personality compatibility. Not shared interests. Responsiveness: the willingness to turn toward a partner's bids for connection rather than ignoring or dismissing them. Drew argues this is a learnable skill, not a fixed trait, and that even people with difficult histories can build it.
