That triangular covenant is why ragged colonial farmers beat the world's greatest empire. The Declaration is also, Kirk notes, the first document to use the term 'United States of America.' The nation's 249-year run as the world's freest country is the fruit of that covenant — and it holds only as long as the nation remains faithful to it.
