Berlin Pride Attack: Islamist Terror Suspected, Suspect Killed

At 2:17 · chapter starts 2:07

German police shot and killed 21-year-old Abdul Balout in a Berlin garden allotment on Sunday evening, following a vehicle attack near the city's Pride event that left one dead and at least 29 injured. Prosecutors say evidence is mounting that the attack was Islamist in motivation. The case raises uncomfortable questions about judicial and security failures: Balout, a German national of Lebanese heritage, had attempted to join the Islamic State on a trip to Lebanon the year before, and in May 2026 a Berlin court convicted him of preparing a serious act of violence. Despite the conviction, he received only a suspended sentence and remained free while prosecutors appealed — until he drove into the crowd.
