The party is expected to submit his nomination formally Monday morning. Democrats view the seat as critical to reclaiming the Senate majority, and Jackson will be running in one of the country's most closely watched contests against the durable incumbent Susan Collins. The challenge, however, is that Jackson's progressive bona fides are brand new — and his record tells a very different story.
A 2010 survey found Jackson, then 42, said abortion should never be legal — including no exceptions for rape, incest, fetal disability, or to protect the mother's health.
CNN unearthed questionnaires showing Troy Jackson opposed abortion without exception in 2004 and 2010 — including to save the mother's life. By 2017 he had a perfect Planned Parenthood rating, and by 2023 he was co-sponsoring one of the most expansive abortion laws in the country. The timing and sincerity of that shift is now the central question of the Maine Senate race.
