#501 – DHH: Future of Programming, AI, Agentic Engineering, Vibe Coding & Linux

Building Omarchy Linux distro
At 43:42 · chapter starts 43:21
The origin story is delightfully unlikely: DHH started watching YouTube videos about Linux Rising during breaks at Le Mans and got bitten by the bug. The first version — Omakube on Ubuntu — was fine but modest. Omarchy, built seven layers deeper in the stack on Arch, started with hand-written Bash and then hit the agentic midpoint. The turning point was three months ago when it became full-throttle: everything written by agents, steered by DHH. The genie metaphor appears here — when a genie grants you unlimited wishes for features you've always wanted in an operating system, and most arrive in five minutes, a few in twenty, and the ambitious ones in two hours, you get a little delirious. The Amarite writing app story illustrates the new paradigm concretely: one hour of wanting a Typora replacement, 20 minutes of agent work on the first version, two days of iteration, and now DHH writes all his essays in software he commissioned but never coded.
DHH read Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke's famous AI memo and thought 'seems like a little much.' Six months later he was living everything in it. Tobi was already on the rocket while DHH was 'still on Earth.' DHH now calls Tobi his partner in crime on Omarchy.
