The most common objection to daemon-following is the obvious one: what if 'my daemon told me to' is just self-justifying impulsivity? Greene meets this directly. Most voices in the head aren't the daemon — they are cultural noise, the tastes and opinions of peers, the commands of fear masquerading as wisdom. The daemon's texture is different: it's an excitement that precedes cultural influence, something you were drawn to at 5 or 8 years old for reasons that still make no rational sense. Greene uses his own fascination with Neanderthals as the example — an excitement about ancient human ancestors that has never been explained by any external influence, has persisted since childhood, and arrives with a quality of aliveness different from socially acquired preferences. He also notes the daemon's negative face: an angry, impudent refusal of things that feel wrong — not 'I'd prefer not to' but 'this is not me, this physically does not fit.'
