Her 16-year-old son Dan presses record before answering. The two-minute recording — now lost, but preserved as a transcript — shows the kidnapper stringing the family along. He again references Susie's fingernails to prove himself, then tells Dan they'll be contacted again in 'a week, a month, maybe two months.' It is sustained, deliberate cruelty dressed up as ambiguity.
