Who runs a secret police state? In East Germany's case, whoever is still alive. Erich Mielke, the Stasi's longest-serving chief, is a case study in survival: he fled Germany in 1931 after killing two policemen, trained with the Soviet NKVD in Moscow, served as a secret agent in the Spanish Civil War, and outlasted every purge. He ran the Stasi from 1953 until the GDR's collapse.
