Hobby vs. Business: Don't Let a Business Ruin Your Hobby

At 59:00 · chapter starts 58:09

Mel asks how someone knows whether what they're doing is a hobby or a business, and Seth delivers a compact framework with a warning embedded in it. Rule one: don't let a business ruin your hobby. If your candle-making or knitting brings you joy and you can afford it, it's a hobby — protect it fiercely, because the moment it becomes a business, you've handed it over to the customer. The customer buys because it's their best option, not because you want them to. Selling to friends is a trap for the same reason: you're converting a relationship into a transaction, and the friendship pays the price when your product isn't actually their best option. The better path, Seth argues, is to let genuine passion and skill create the kind of offering that is legitimately the best option for specific people — and not to force it on anyone for whom it isn't.

Write 3 Business Plans — Then Pick One Randomly

How to Get More Out of Life: Make More Money & Build Someth… · Jul 11, 2026 Business

Write three completely different business plans: who's it for, what's it for, how will I know if it's working. Then pretend you'll pick one randomly. That exercise forces you to think with your whole brain instead of just defending the idea you already fell in love with. If you don't have time to write three plans, you don't have time to start a business.
