Aging, Training & Processing Speed

At 21:20 · chapter starts 16:49

Wood unpacks the distinction between two cognitive metrics that most people conflate. Reaction time — the simple speed of responding to a stimulus — declines slowly and steadily from the early 30s. Processing speed — the rate at which the brain can actually think about and remember what it perceives — is remarkably stable until about age 60, then falls sharply. This matters because the ACTiVE trial specifically targeted processing speed: participants were shown images for decreasing time windows, forcing them to remember what they saw and where, while the window shrank to fractions of a second as they improved. That training also improved cholinergic signaling in the forebrain — the circuitry most vulnerable to the early stages of dementia. The Maintain Your Brain and POINTER trials both used a similar multimodal approach (diet, exercise, cardiovascular risk management, and brain training), lending convergent validity to the finding that targeted cognitive challenge in these domains can meaningfully alter dementia trajectories.
