The Cyclops episode is Homer's definitive statement on the polarity between civilised cunning and barbaric force. Polyphemus and his kin are extreme in their rejection of civilisation: they recognise no gods, no law, and no social order beyond the individual household. This makes them powerful in a straight fight and completely vulnerable to trickery. Odysseus gets his men into the cave, gets the Cyclops drunk on exceptional wine (a culturally loaded gift the Cyclops has no antibodies to handle), sharpens a stake while the giant sleeps, and blinds him. He tells Polyphemus his name is 'Nobody,' so when the other Cyclopses ask who's hurting him, the answer 'Nobody is hurting me' gets the response 'Well, that's just Zeus's will, tough luck.' Alex lingers on the exquisite Greek wordplay: 'utis' (nobody) in an if-clause transforms into 'matis' (trickery) — so the other Cyclopses are literally saying 'if trickery is killing you.' Then Odysseus ruins everything by shouting his real name from the departing ship, triggering Polyphemus's prayer to his father Poseidon.
Odysseus blinded the Cyclops, escaped, and then couldn't resist revealing his real name. The Cyclops happened to be Poseidon's son. One moment of pride turned a clever escape into a decade of divine persecution. Homer is clear: Odysseus earned this one.
