The Dangerous Physics of Weapons and the Reference Committee

At 29:40 · chapter starts 27:30

The conversation descends into history. In 1940, as neutron chain-reaction physics was making weapons obviously possible, a body called the Reference Committee was established inside the National Research Council to quietly hold up dangerous papers submitted to scientific journals. Researchers not inside the Manhattan Project found their work delayed or returned for endless revisions. No money. No publication. The beginning, Weinstein argues, of the modern peer review control mechanism as a national security tool. This isn't presented as a conspiracy but as a rational response to a terrifying new reality: physics had become too dangerous to leave open. The irony is that this same suppression mechanism has now been turned against Weinstein himself, who is trying to do what the Manhattan Project scientists were doing — solve the puzzle — but from outside the sanctioned group.
