Joyce told the tipster she'd received a letter from someone she didn't trust who was coming to visit. Steve's former girlfriend Bruce Bierbaum also told police that Steve had told Joyce she was 'the source of all his troubles' and that he had been trying to see her. When police followed up, they discovered Steve had quit school and moved back to New York mid-semester — a departure his college roommate later told Crime Junkie didn't seem financially motivated as Steve claimed.
