What is Dad Brain?

Darby Saxbe walks through the quantitative differences between maternal and paternal brain remodelling. New mothers lose around 2.5% of gray matter volume across the entire brain — including subcortical structures like the amygdala, ventral striatum, and other regions linked to hormones, reward, and gut feelings. Fathers, by contrast, lose approximately 1% and the changes are confined primarily to the cortex, which governs executive functioning and reasoning. Crucially, Saxbe's lab found that paternal brain change is entirely tied to parenting behaviour: dads who felt more bonded prenatally, who took more time off after birth, who spent more daily time with their babies in the first months, and who reported greater pleasure in parenting showed the biggest brain changes. The implication is radical — simply being a biological father is not sufficient to rewire the paternal brain.
