Key battles of the Civil War

At 2:06:53 · chapter starts 2:00:05

The sequence from First Manassas — watched by Washington picnickers who expected a quick Union victory — through Shiloh in April 1862 to Antietam marks the war's psychological transformation. Shiloh's 25,000 casualties in two days and the Seven Days Battles' 36,000 casualties shattered all prior assumptions about scale. The section traces how McClellan's failure to capture Richmond convinced both Lincoln and Congress that slavery had to become a war aim: if the Confederacy could survive this long with slavery underpinning its economy and mobilization, striking at slavery was a military imperative. Lincoln waited for a Union 'victory' to announce the proclamation; Lee's retreat from Antietam — a battle he survived only by the narrowest margin with 35,000 men against McClellan's 80,000 — provided it. Five days later, on September 22, Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
