What caused the Civil War?

Gary Gallagher opens with a precise correction of popular mythology: the pre-war political crisis was not about abolishing slavery but about whether slavery could expand into federal territories. He traces the fracturing of the two-party system through the collapse of the Whigs, the emergence of the Republican Party with its single key plank of no westward expansion of slavery, and the catastrophic 1860 Democratic convention in Charleston that produced two competing Democratic candidates. When Lincoln won, the white South read his House Divided speech and Seward's Irrepressible Conflict speech as signals that slavery would eventually be destroyed — and seven Deep South states seceded before his inauguration. The sequence is precise: December 20, 1860, South Carolina leads; by February, the Deep South has formed a new government in Montgomery.
