Oliver North: The Unlikely Covert Operator

At 25:01 · chapter starts 24:22

The name most associated with Iran-Contra is Oliver North, and Josh and Chuck spend time on the counterintuitive reality of who North actually was. The assumption — validated by his composed, heroic television performance during the congressional hearings — was that North was a seasoned covert operator. In fact, he was a career Marine, Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient, devout Catholic, and future NRA president who had no covert operations experience whatsoever. He was learning the job in real time, improvising an entire shadow intelligence and logistics apparatus from scratch. That apparatus — planes, airstrips, arms shipments, shell companies — somehow worked. Chuck notes that North was seemingly in it for ideology, unlike Richard Secord, who was in it for money.
