The Science of Building Habits That Stick

At 23:05 · chapter starts 20:47

The habit chapter draws on what Greenberg calls a 'horse race' study: 20 techniques, hundreds of participants, each person randomly assigned five techniques plus a control condition, tracked for a month. The headline finding is blunt — almost none of the techniques worked. But the exceptions are instructive. A sticky note in a visible location helped forgetful people by providing a simple reminder of their intention. The tiny habits technique — always having a minimal version of the habit (e.g. 10 squats instead of a gym session) — never lets the habit machinery break, and Greenberg reports that participants with this fallback were actually more successful at the full habit, not less. The standout, however, was 'habit reflection': recall a past habit you successfully built, write down what helped you succeed, then apply those same strategies to your new habit. It outperforms generic techniques because it is self-adapting — it leverages whatever worked specifically for you, rather than assuming everyone has the same obstacle.
