Can Anyone Rewire Their Thinking?

At 55:10 · chapter starts 50:22

Cognitive restructuring is often misunderstood as trying to eliminate negative thoughts. Greenberg reframes it: you rarely control your first automatic thought, but you can train your second — the response. The question to ask is not 'is this thought true?' but 'is this thought the most helpful one, and is there an equally true alternative?' Over time, the trained second thought becomes habitual. The conversation turns to whether intelligence correlates with overthinking. Greenberg distinguishes worry from overthinking: more intelligent people tend to enjoy thinking and think more often, so overthinking often comes along for the ride. But worry is not uniquely linked to intelligence. The exchange also tackles the common belief that anxiety is a form of responsibility — parents worrying about children, workers worrying about performance. Greenberg's counter is that if the worry is damaging your relationships or driving people away, it is clearly not making you a better parent or worker, whatever it feels like internally.

The Productivity Equation

The Only 12 Lessons Buried In Every Self-Help Book - Spence… · Oct 10, 2026 Business

Healthy productivity is time worked, multiplied by efficiency, multiplied by the importance of what you're working on relative to what you actually value. Most advice focuses on efficiency; the highest leverage — and most ignored — variable is importance, because you can find something 100× more valuable without adding a single work hour.
