Over 1 Million Players, 8 Backend Devs

Ep. 155 From Zero to Hero with MrQ · Mar 14, 2023 Technology

MrQ serves over a million registered players with a backend engineering team of just 8 to 10 people. The entire company's engineering org — including a 3-person game studio, 4 frontend devs, 1 DevOps engineer, and 2 QAs — deliberately stayed lean to preserve culture.

Platform Scale: 1 Million Players, 700 Games, 40+ Providers

At 42:35 · chapter starts 36:40

Shane asks for the numbers, and Iulian delivers them plainly. Over a million registered players, with tens of thousands active concurrently. Seven hundred games on the platform from more than forty providers. But it wasn't always this way. When MrQ launched in 2018, the team was naively confident they could attract players with a smaller, curated selection of high-quality games from a handful of preferred providers. Players disagreed loudly — asking immediately for games that weren't there. MrQ responded by expanding the library aggressively, but they haven't simply accumulated games passively: the team actively culls the catalog, regularly testing every game across all devices and pulling anything that doesn't perform well. It's a quality-over-quantity philosophy that takes real operational effort at 700 titles and counting.
