The Internet, the Collective Unconscious, and the Risk of Monoculture

At 41:35 · chapter starts 36:10

Marc Andreessen asks the big structural question: does the internet — with its capacity to connect every niche community globally — represent an incremental upgrade to the collective unconscious, or a more fundamental transformation? Rubin sees both sides: the connectivity allows a punk rock obsessive in the suburbs to find their tribe anywhere in the world, but it also trains people to accept easy answers and stop doing the hard work of tuning into themselves. The Way of Code is, at its core, a counterargument to this drift — an argument for going inward rather than outward. Andreessen then raises Tyler Cowen's observation that regional American culture has been dramatically homogenized: 100 years ago, traveling from Louisiana to Maine meant radically different food, accents, architecture, and social arrangements. Now everywhere has Chili's. The global internet, Andreessen worries, might be delivering not the maximum creativity of a deeply interconnected collective unconscious, but a bland global monoculture where all variation washes out.
