The 6-Step Framework for Setting Real Boundaries

How to Set (And Keep) Your Boundaries, Solved · Jan 1, 2026 Education

Boundaries aren't a feeling or a statement — they're a six-step practice. Start with awareness (where's the resentment?), communicate assertively using the NVC formula (when I feel X in Y situation, I need Z), enforce consistently, anticipate pushback from people who rely on having no limits, adapt the boundary as life changes, and manage the guilt that comes when you cut off someone's supply of validation.

Translating Values into Practical Boundaries

At 59:54 · chapter starts 51:40

Manson makes the formula concrete: values are the why; limits are the how. If you value health, an internal limit might be 'I don't stay out past midnight except on special occasions' — real flexibility baked in — while the external version is simply declining a concert that starts at 11 PM and sending a friendly note explaining why. If you value family, an internal limit is 'no work when I'm home'; the external version is telling colleagues not to expect a response to a 9 PM message until morning. He stresses that limits should be written down — not as commandments, but so that when the situation arises you already know what to say. Step three is a check: are the limits clear enough to be observable, and are the exceptions explicitly defined? Vagueness is the enemy — 'I want to sleep more' is not a limit; 'I'm in bed by midnight, with explicit exceptions for birthdays and holidays' is. Both Manson and Birnie acknowledge that balance is genuinely hard, not a cop-out: taking a limit to an extreme in either direction is easy; finding the contextually appropriate middle requires repeated self-correction and Aristotelian calibration.
