#2: You Are Not Your Thoughts, You Are Your Response to Them

At 5:47 · chapter starts 4:57

Before this mindset landed, Jay was taking delivery of every thought — you're not good enough, this will never work — as if it were factual correspondence from reality. The cognitive revolution that changed this came from Aaron Beck, the founder of CBT, who identified automatic thoughts as rapid, reflexive mental commentary that in depressed and anxious people is systematically distorted and experienced as unquestionable truth. Beck's entire therapeutic breakthrough was built on one pivot: the thought is not the truth — it is a hypothesis, and like any hypothesis it can be tested. Marcus Aurelius's line from the Meditations reinforces this: 'You have power over your mind, not outside events.' Jay's immediate application is a three-word test: 'Is this true?' Not could it be true, not is it possible — is it actually evidentially, demonstrably true? If the thought is a feeling dressed as a fact, you are not required to take delivery.
