The Scofield Bible: Oxford's Theological Trojan Horse
C.I. Scofield was a relative nobody who somehow had his passage paid to Oxford, where he produced the first built-in study Bible in history. Low-church evangelical pastors who owned nothing but a Bible couldn't distinguish inspired scripture from Darby's marginal notes — and within a generation, dispensationalism became the assumed theology of American evangelicalism. The same Oxford institution published the Balfour Declaration within a year.
