James Madol was raised in upstate New York by an antisemitic mother and found refuge in sci-fi as a teenager, absorbing the heaven-storming scientists and master races of 1930s pulp fiction. He formed the Animist Party in a pulp magazine in 1945 — an admirably ballsy year to launch a fascist movement — before taking over the National Renaissance Party from its elderly founder in 1949.
