Why Self-Forgiveness Is the Wrong Advice

Confessions of an accidental killer | Gregg Ward · Jul 8, 2026 Health & Fitness

The most common advice after causing irreversible harm is 'forgive yourself.' Ward rejects this entirely. To him, self-forgiveness is indistinguishable from making excuses — a way to feel better at the cost of genuine accountability. He was wholly responsible. He always will be. Moving forward is not the same as letting yourself off the hook.

Bad Advice and the Problem With Self-Forgiveness

At 10:00 · chapter starts 9:42

Ward maps the landscape of bad advice with mordant clarity. At the funeral, someone told him God wanted Michelle in heaven. He understood the intent; he found it maddening. But the advice he kept receiving — over and over — was to forgive himself. To Ward, that instruction is morally incoherent. Self-forgiveness, as he understands it, is a mechanism for feeling better about yourself by quietly releasing yourself from responsibility. He was wholly responsible for what happened that night. He always will be. Forgiving himself is 'off the table.' What he needed, and couldn't find in the standard self-help toolkit, was not absolution but a framework: how do you move forward in a positive way without either punishing yourself indefinitely or pretending it didn't matter? The distinction he draws — between accountability and self-punishment — is the hinge on which the rest of the talk turns.

The Worry Time Technique

The Only 12 Lessons Buried In Every Self-Help Book - Spence… · Oct 10, 2026 Health & Fitness

The worry-time technique assigns all worries to one scheduled slot (e.g. 5 PM). Every time a worry surfaces, you write it down and ban yourself from engaging with it until that time. When 5 PM arrives, most worries feel trivial and the act of batch-worrying exposes how little it actually accomplishes.

Most downtime defaults are things you regret immediately after — phone scrolling, binge TV. 'Glad you did it' activities meet the same need for rest but leave you feeling like you spent your time well. The switch from a bad screen to a documentary, a book, or a walk costs almost no extra effort but compounds into identity over time.

Cognitive Restructuring: Training Your Second Thought

The Only 12 Lessons Buried In Every Self-Help Book - Spence… · Oct 10, 2026 Health & Fitness

You rarely control your first reactive thought. But you can train your second thought — the response to the trigger — by asking whether your initial reaction is the most helpful one and replacing it with something equally true but more constructive. Over time, that second thought becomes automatic.
