The transformation begins at around 14–15 when Strickland enters his first gym and immediately gets dismantled by older, more experienced fighters. Walking out with a bloody nose, he feels something he's never felt before: happiness. The gym provides a brotherhood, a structure, and a channel for violence that isn't going to land him in a cell. He grows his hair long to recreate his identity away from 'Hate Strickland,' skips school entirely to train, and turns professional at 17. At that point he's still broke, still riding a bike everywhere, still has no GED, and still hates himself — but he has a direction. He explicitly states that without fighting, his path would have led to a single horrific act and lifetime institutionalization: 'no romantic story, just serial violence and cages.'
At 14–15, Strickland walked into a gym and got beaten bloody by men 5 years older. It was the first time in his life he felt something other than hate. The gym gave him community, identity, and a channel for violence that wasn't going to land him in prison. Without it, he says, his path was a serial killer's: one horrific act, institutionalization, release, another act, repeat.
