Mark tells the story of Gordon Allport, a fresh college grad who visited Freud's artifact-laden Vienna office in the early 1920s and was immediately psychoanalyzed for trying to make small talk. Allport had mentioned a boy on the tram obsessively cleaning everything; Freud's response — 'Was the little boy you?' — enraged him and sent him back across Europe questioning the entire Freudian project. Freud's worldview held that character was fixed by childhood and that the most psychoanalysis could achieve was turning intense misery into ordinary unhappiness. Allport rejected this at a gut level, believing people are what they do — not what they were — and this schism would define decades of competing schools in psychology. He returned to Harvard to pursue graduate psychology with one goal: prove that change is real.
