Oz grew up as the child of immigrants who defined success as getting a degree, a job, and a salary. He began doing magic at 13 to escape boredom, then started working as a strolling restaurant magician at 14 — printing his own business cards and hand-cutting them — to fund new tricks after his parents' divorce. He worked on Wall Street for several years, but the pull of performing grew too strong. In 2005, he quit. Day one on the couch, he had a moment of clarity that is the engine of everything he teaches: nobody from the outside is going to make this happen. There is no vaudeville impresario who will call and make him a star. He turned off the television and started making moves.
