Wood explains that the human brain is unique among species in having approximately 60% white matter — the myelinated axon highways that allow fast inter-regional signaling — and that white matter deterioration is one of the strongest age-related predictors of cognitive decline. Multiple studies (roughly 3–4 RCTs in older adults) show that 2–3 weekly sessions of multi-joint resistance training for 6+ months produce significant structural improvements in white matter and corresponding gains in executive function and processing speed. The mediating molecule is IGF-1, which is particularly elevated by resistance training and is critical to white matter development throughout the lifespan. Aerobic exercise, by contrast, preferentially benefits the hippocampus (gray matter) through BDNF and lactate — lactate crosses the blood-brain barrier easily and directly stimulates BDNF production. This creates a clean two-track framework: cardio for memory and hippocampal volume, resistance training for white matter and executive function. Neither can substitute for the other, which is why Wood's recommendation is always both.

Omega-3s and B Vitamins: The Synergy Most Studies Miss

Accelerate Learning & Increase Cognitive Capacity | Dr. Tom… · Jul 20, 2026 Health & Fitness

Three randomized controlled trials show that omega-3s and B vitamins are synergistically dependent — neither produces cognitive benefit without adequate status of the other. Most omega-3 and B vitamin trials fail because they don't account for this interaction, leading to false conclusions that neither nutrient works.
