How to Know a Risk Is Worth It

At 16:08 · chapter starts 12:48

Jay addresses one of the deepest fears underlying resistance to change: the belief that there is one perfect life waiting for each of us, and that every ending represents a catastrophic deviation from that path. He calls this out as a major source of paralysis — the feeling that changing careers means you've 'fallen behind', that an ended relationship means you've 'missed your chance'. He counters this not with optimism alone but with psychological research: studies on happiness, fulfilment, and life satisfaction reveal no evidence of a single destined life. What the research does show is that human beings are remarkably adaptable — we create meaning wherever we invest ourselves. The life imagined at 20 could have been beautiful, he says, and the life you're building now can still be beautiful too. These possibilities do not compete. He then brings this back to identity with the insight that the version of you who wanted something years ago was completely sincere — but sincerity does not require permanence. You can honour who you were and still choose differently now.
