Escaping the Victim Mindset

Jett paints a viscerally specific scene: 1 AM in a freezing Chicago warehouse trailer, lifting boxes while the people around him work a fraction as hard yet get to nicer universities because their parents foot the bill. He built layers of resentment for years — three jobs over summer, better grades, worse outcomes. The turning point came unexpectedly through reading Marcus Aurelius's Meditations ('the ancient clean your room by Jordan Peterson,' as Chris quips). But it wasn't a quick fix: it took years of hard examination to genuinely let go. The structural problem, both agree, is social media. For millennia, humans compared themselves only to the 150-odd people in their Dunbar group — you had no idea what was happening in the valley over the ridge. Social media replaced that with the top 1% of the entire species, curated in real time. Jett describes scrolling past Andrew Tate and the Nelk Boys and feeling rage — why do they get this? The resentment was real and understandable, but also paralysing. The moment he genuinely released that comparison and accepted himself, he says, the things he'd been chasing started arriving. He closes with a warning for the first generation to have grown up entirely inside this comparison machine: if you carry that resentment through your 20s and 30s, you'll hit 35 and wonder where your life went.
