Stoicism and Modern Psychology: CBT, REBT, and Therapy

At 2:26:55 · chapter starts 2:21:40

Drew Birnie walks through the history of how CBT and REBT emerged in the 1950s-60s as alternatives to psychoanalysis and pure behaviorism, with both Beck and Ellis recognizing their patients were not unconscious of their destructive patterns but simply unable to reinterpret them — a fundamentally Stoic insight. Ryan Holiday draws the deeper historical parallel: in the ancient world, philosophy played the role therapy plays today — an ongoing, recurring practice of self-examination with skilled guidance. The Scipionic Circle, Socrates as counselor, the 12-step group as a modern Stoic porch — all reflect the same underlying need. Mark Manson suggests that Stoicism is probably the greatest system ever devised for cognitive reappraisal (restructuring your interpretation of events), but acknowledges it falls short at addressing severe emotional dysregulation or trauma.

Stoicism and CBT: 2,500 Years Ahead of Schedule

Stoicism (ft. Ryan Holiday), Solved · Oct 15, 2025 Health & Fitness

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, pioneered by Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis in the 1950s-60s, is essentially a scientific repackaging of Stoic ideas. The ABC model of adversity-behavior-consequence is Epictetus's framework for desire, action, and assent. The journaling practices are straight out of Seneca. Beck and Ellis both later credited Stoic philosophy — though it was largely after the fact. The Stoics were doing what therapists do, just 2,500 years earlier.
