In August 1864, Lincoln privately told his cabinet they would not win reelection. Then Sherman took Atlanta, Sheridan swept the Shenandoah Valley, and everything changed. It was Sherman who reelected Lincoln — and Lincoln's reelection guaranteed emancipation and the end of the Confederacy.
Every ~80 years, civilizations hit the same wall: debt maxes out, wealth gaps explode, internal politics fracture, and external wars follow. The last reset was 1945. Dalio says the US and UK are now deep in the decline phase, not heading toward it.
Take slavery out of the picture and there is no Civil War — end of discussion. What's harder to grasp is that most Union soldiers still fought to save the republic, not to free enslaved people, making causation and motivation two entirely different questions.
A Vermont farm boy didn't put on a uniform to free enslaved people — he did it because he believed the republic his ancestors bled for in the Revolution was too precious to surrender over a lost election. Union meant democracy itself at a moment when Europe was sliding toward oligarchy.
The Confederacy claimed to fight for states' rights yet built the most intrusive central government in American history. It passed the first national draft, a national income tax, crop seizures, and suspended habeas corpus — all before the Union did.
Lincoln had almost no formal schooling, no administrative experience, and a rural accent that Harvard men sneered at. Yet he became the most eloquent president in American history and eventually outmaneuvered every more-educated rival in his cabinet. The man is simply inexplicable.
In a perverse historical irony, Robert E. Lee is partly responsible for emancipation. His battlefield brilliance extended the war long enough that the Union concluded it had to destroy slavery to win — and without that extended war, slavery might have outlasted even Brazil.
The Emancipation Proclamation reads like a shipping invoice on purpose. Lincoln had no constitutional power to end slavery except as a wartime measure, and he needed Democrats to stay on board. The deliberately cold legal language was a calculated political act, not a rhetorical failure.
Before they ever faced each other, Grant's total casualties across all campaigns were 37,000. Lee's were over 98,000. The bloodiest general in US history was not Grant the Butcher — it was Robert E. Lee, whose soldiers faced a 73% chance of becoming a casualty.
The Confederacy didn't need to capture Washington or invade New England — it just needed Northern civilians to decide the cost wasn't worth it. Like the US in Vietnam, the side with more resources still lost when public will collapsed. In the summer of 1864, the Confederacy came very close.
