We're not more anxious because the world is scarier — we're more anxious because it's safer. Kierkegaard diagnosed it in the 19th century as the 'dizziness of freedom': more options, more paralysis. Today we have it on steroids, and what people call anxiety is often just a crippling fear of commitment and accountability.
