Gary John Bishop didn't tell his mother he loved her from age 12 to age 40 — 28 years. At some point as a boy he took too many knocks and stepped off the field of his own family, becoming a spectator and judge instead of a participant. When he finally called her and said 'I love you,' he realised he had been carrying that same emotional wall straight into his marriage.
There are things you did as a kid you just stopped doing because you grew up. Porn belongs in that category. It's not a moral indictment — it's a simple observation that watching strangers have sex for stimulation is a child's response to the world.
Religious men especially believe marriage is the magic pill that kills the porn habit. It isn't. Marriage and kids multiply your stress load, which is the exact trigger that drives you back to porn. If you don't deal with it before the ring, you're just importing the problem into a much more fragile environment.
When you're hiding porn, you're always on high alert — did I close the tab, does the Bluetooth have audio, can she pick up my phone? That constant hypervigilance makes you irritable, defensive, and prone to lashing out. Your wife senses it, confronts you, you lie. The porn itself isn't even the worst part.
Modern men are living like monks — isolated in cells, interacting only with simulated people. You're not having sex with the porn star. You're not interacting with Bryce Harper. You're alone in a room pressing a button, mistaking a dopamine hit for a human connection.
There's a subculture of men who have built their entire life around porn consumption — dedicated rooms, equipment, rituals. It sounds like a joke, but the Harper's piece on goon caves showed it's a real and growing phenomenon. The cave is just the logical endpoint of a habit nobody interrupted early enough.
Bert pitched LeeAnn a radical life reset: sell the house, buy five small apartments in five cities, and just travel. LeeAnn's five cities — Hawaii, Austin, Atlanta, New York, Chicago. Bert traded Chicago for Mexico City and added Florence. The whole fantasy started because LeeAnn admitted she wasn't happy.
Midlife crises are a post-WWII invention: people only started having them once they began living past 50. Divorce exploded from roughly 7,000 to 80,000 in the US after the war. Bert says he got lucky — he achieved his dreams right when his midlife crisis should have hit, at age 44–53, and unknowingly worked through it.
LeeAnn told Bert she was happiest when their daughters were young and at home. Everything since has been an attempt to get back to that feeling. It's one of the most honest admissions in the episode — and it's the catalyst for the 'sell everything' fantasy.
Bert Kreischer draws a hard line between happiness and contentment. He wants indulgence, exuberance, and joy. Contentment, to him, is a failure state. The unexpected confession: sobriety sometimes leaves him merely content, which is his biggest problem with it.
