Categorization: Seeing the Totality to Make Better Decisions

At 33:37 · chapter starts 31:40

Joanna introduces the second step of The Home Edit method: categorization. The core insight is that scattered items are invisible — you don't know what you actually own. By pulling all similar items together before editing, you can see the totality of a category and make genuinely informed decisions. Mel's example of her great-grandmother's items is perfect: she loves the china on display and lights up talking about it, but the drawer full of broken costume jewelry triggers nothing. By seeing all of grandma's things together, it becomes easy to see what actually has meaning and what's just guilt-driven accumulation. Categorization also exposes redundancy — seeing all 40 pens at once makes it obvious that 30 need to go, in a way that picking through a drawer never would.
