Bishop argues that no matter who you are or what you do, the purpose underlying all human activity reduces to one question: can I be of use? The ego, he says, wants what it wants and might even generate results — but you will never be happy or settled following it. He invokes philosopher Alan Watts: the meaning of life is simply to be alive. The work, then, is not positive-thinking affirmations but a genuine dismantling: what are you constrained by? What's locking you in? Once you remove the fear and the armour, what needs to get out — the original you, the vast, fluid self of a two-year-old before identity narrowed — is far more powerful than anything you put up to protect yourself.
