On New Year's Eve of 1999, a massive fight ends the relationship and he leaves — and in his absence, Chloe begins to breathe again. She researches adoption options, finds a new apartment, plans a new job. Then he comes back in mid-January, inexplicably positive, almost manicky. They make dinner. She sits down. She wakes up in an ambulance being told she is losing the baby and has significant injuries but is going to be okay. The worst part, she says, is the look on her father's face when he walks into the hospital room. Dax, speaking as a parent, gently pushes back: there is no state in which your child deserves to feel shame. After a week in hospital and two more weeks recovering at her mother's, Chloe retrieves her belongings — and on the way out, may or may not have fed all his important documentation through a shredder.
