Wildfires Blanket the Northwest in Smoke

At 2:34 · chapter starts 2:03

Across the American West, the summer of fire shows no sign of letting up. In eastern Oregon, massive range fires have been burning for weeks, blackening tens of thousands of acres and choking the air in dense smoke. Jenny Mo, who runs a bakery in the region, described a family friend on oxygen who hasn't been able to leave his house in two weeks — a vivid, human measure of the health toll. Further south in Colorado, the Aspen Acres Fire near Pueblo has leveled hundreds of homes. Incident commander Ben Wagner acknowledged recent rains gave his team 'a reprieve' — but he was careful not to celebrate. With most of the West forecast to bake in extreme heat for at least another week, that reprieve is almost certainly temporary.
