Hormones Modulate Neuromodulators

At 6:55 · chapter starts 5:07

Before diving into the toolkit, Huberman takes a detour through endocrinology to explain why two people doing the same protocol can get very different results. Hormones act as background amplifiers of neuromodulators — testosterone tends to run in concert with dopamine, so when testosterone rises, dopamine activity often follows. Cortisol and other corticosteroids partner with epinephrine to drive energy and alertness. Oxytocin and prolactin, the social-bonding hormones, collaborate with serotonin to produce feelings of warmth and contentment. Acetylcholine stands alone — it doesn't need hormone support to exert its powerful effects on focus and neuroplasticity. This section is brief but strategically important: it explains why hormonal health is upstream of neurochemical optimization.
