Values work is the first stop in almost every coaching programme, and Greenberg has spent years studying why it so often fails to produce insight. His team's research mapped all human intrinsic values — things valued for their own sake, not as a means to something else — and found 22 distinct categories, from longevity and reducing suffering to connection, adventure, nature, and spirituality. The human brain encodes preferences directly, but determining whether something is truly intrinsic requires an extra cognitive step most people never take. Greenberg describes a friend who was inexplicably depressed despite having a 'great' boyfriend: when he asked her to list her own values and then her boyfriend's qualities, there was zero overlap. When he asked her to list her parents' values, it was a perfect match. She had been living out her parents' ideal life, not her own. The story illustrates how years or even decades can pass with people confusing what their culture or family values with what they themselves value intrinsically — and how a simple mapping exercise can make the mismatch instantly visible. The free intrinsic values test is available at ClearerThinking.org.
Most people confuse things they value instrumentally (because they get them other things) with things they value intrinsically (for their own sake). Greenberg's friend stayed in a miserable relationship for years because she was living by her parents' values, not her own — the values map made the mismatch instantly visible.
A study found that participants told to try to stay awake while in bed fell asleep faster than participants told to try to sleep — illustrating the paradox of direct effort.
Performing composure is not the same as having composure — emotionally sensitive people who suppress their feelings are acting a role, not resolving the underlying feeling.
Emotional sensitivity is the raw input signal and emotional intelligence is the cultivated output — meaning sensitivity is a prerequisite for high EQ, not an obstacle to it.
Men who appear emotionally avoidant are frequently emotionally sensitive individuals who were never given tools or permission to explore their sensitivity, so they default to withdrawal.
Being ghosted is particularly damaging for sensitive people because their brain doesn't interpret it as the relationship ending — it interprets it as evidence of personal insufficiency.
Kierkegaard's concept of anxiety as 'the dizziness of freedom' predates Freud's psychological framework by roughly 60 years, yet modern research has since validated his core claims about commitment and identity.
Between 2003 and 2020, Americans accumulated roughly 24 extra hours per month spent alone — the equivalent of a part-time job's worth of isolation, and that's before the pandemic.
Median age at first marriage climbed from 21 (women) and 23 (men) in the 1970s to nearly 29 (women) and 30 (men) today — a rise of 6–8 years per gender, extending the 'emerging adulthood' liminal phase.
