Sydney Brownstone lived just blocks from CHOP, and when an editor called the morning of June 29 to ask if she could report from the scene, she ran out of her apartment and walked toward the protest. The first blocks looked normal — dog walkers, rainbow crosswalks, a leather daddy bar, familiar Capitol Hill. But the moment she crossed onto 12th Avenue, the world changed. CHOP had been there for three weeks, an Occupy-style camp spread across roughly 8 square blocks of the neighborhood. On that particular morning, it was a crime scene. Crowds were screaming in the street. A protester was carrying a baseball bat. Black clergy members prayed over a blood-smeared car. Brownstone quickly learned what had happened: two Black teenagers had been shot hours earlier, one fatally. His name was Antonio Mays Jr.
