Bad Reason #3: The Avoidant Ex Who Returns Without Self-Reflection

At 20:20 · chapter starts 18:35

The third bad reason is the most specific — and the one Stephanie receives the most questions about. In a classic anxious-avoidant dynamic, the avoidant partner may withdraw, end the relationship, and then reappear weeks or months later as if nothing happened, offering little beyond 'I miss you — can we try again?' With no acknowledgment of what went wrong, no self-reflection about the fears that drove the withdrawal, and no account of what will be different, Stephanie says: don't do it. Worse, she explains, every cycle of break-up-and-reconnect makes the anxiously attached partner smaller and smaller — they stop voicing needs, walk on eggshells, and contort themselves to avoid triggering another exit, until barely any sense of self remains. The absence of self-awareness from the returning partner is the critical red flag.
